Clash Royale Epic Card Rankings (May 2019)

It is time for a new epic card rankings for all the epic cards in Clash Royale! We will be having a power ranking, 27-1, of the epic cards in Clash Royale as of May 2019. As many of you know, I have done this ranking before, when there were still 27 epic cards. The top 5 cards then, in order, were barbarian barrel, PEKKA, poison, baby dragon, and golem. Let’s see how much those rankings were shaken up over the past couple balance changes and updates!

You can view the old ranking here: https://clashfordummies.com/2019/02/17/clash-royale-epic-card-rankings-february-2019/

Clash Royale Ranking the Epic Cards

How the Epic Cards are Ranked

When ranking these cards we put a lot of thought and effort into what makes the best epic card the best. We are considering a variety of different ways to rank which are order in importance as follows:

  1. Versatility
  2. Cost/Damage Ratio (is the card worth it?)
  3. Strength on defense and offense

So now that you know what we are judging on, lets go ahead and get into the rankings, starting with number 27!

Note: Text color indicates which way the card is trending in regard to the February rankings.

Epic Card Rankings

#27- Wall Breakers

Wall Breakers Clash Royale

One of the worst cards ever released in Clash Royale, wall breakers remain at the BOTTOM of not only epic cards, but of all cards in Clash Royale. Despite a buff in the May balance changes, the wall breakers remain completely unused. This card is just absolutely worthless, bringing no real value to the table through its use.

#26- Cannon Cart

Cannon Cart Clash Royale

I really can’t think of another card that has bounced around as much as the cannon cart. Believe it or not, but the cannon cart has ranked in the top 5 of epic cards a couple times, but here we are at the very bottom of the epics now. It seems like Clash Royale can’t find a perfect spot for the cannon cart, with it either being OP or very weak.

#25- Mirror

Clash Royale Mirror

I’m a big fan of the concept behind the mirror, but the real problem is that it can never really be a top tier meta card without a complete rework. Having the extra one elixir makes it so that you would only ever use the mirror in very niche situations, making it tough for the mirror to gain prominence as a popular and useful card.

#24- Clone

Clash Royale Clone Spell

I’ve actually been seeing more and more clone spells out and about, especially when playing against lava hound and giant decks. While the clone can still be considered a “bad” card, it is starting to finally gain some momentum. The real issue right now is that due to the popularity of two elixir spells, the cloned troops are countered for a positive elixir trade.

#23- Goblin Giant

Goblin Giant Clash Royale

There’s no doubt in my mind that the goblin giant is the worst win condition in Clash Royale. On the ladder, I might have faced a goblin giant twice since its introduction back in May 2018. The giant part of the goblin giant needs a damage buff, and I think even adding a third spear goblin would be a great way to buff the GG.

#22- Bowler

Bowler Clash Royale

There has long been a notion that the bowler can only succeed as long as the graveyard is a popular card. I’ve been rooting for the bowler to break away from that perception, which slowly seems to be happening. The real hope is that the bowler can stand on his own as a win condition as well as a support card.

#21- Freeze

Freeze Clash Royale

While the original buff to the freeze, which made it deal damage, made it one of the most popular cards in Clash Royale, it has slowly been reined back in to lower levels. I still love using the freeze, especially in graveyard freeze decks, but it is obvious that the freeze is nowhere near the levels it used to be when it first received the game-changing buff.

#20- Rage

Clash Royale Rage Spell

Remember the old giant-witch-rage meta? That was one of the most frustrating decks to play against, but now I’n nervous that we might see a return of something like that, with the rage back in the top 20 epic cards. It still has a long way to climb, but this is where it all starts. Let’s hope that the rage stays towards the bottom of these rankings.

#19- Electro-Dragon

Electro Dragon Clash Royale

The biggest faller in these rankings is going to be the electro-dragon, down 8 spots to #19. The electro-dragon has fallen off big time after being the #1 card in our November epic card rankings. I think that the e-drag still is a decent support card, but other cards have proven stronger after the December balance changes a while back.

#18- Giant Skeleton

Giant Skeleton Clash Royale

I absolutely love the idea behind the giant skeleton, so it always pains me to see him ranked low in every epic card rankings. Still though, the giant skeleton is an elite defensive card, with the bomb it drops dealing huge damage. It just needs to have a smaller sight range for following kiting units so that it can better attack the tower.

#17- Hunter

Hunter Clash Royale

While other four elixir support cards are valued over the hunter, the hunter stays a decent support option that can offer a lot of close range support for a ranged unit. The real issue with the hunter is that he needs to be close to deal any significant damage, which means he’s much more likely to be killed by an enemy troop.

#16- X-Bow

Clash Royale XBow

I honestly think that this might be the best spot the x-bow has been in a long time, as far as balancing goes. In the past, the x-bow has either been super weak or a top win condition. Now though, the x-bow is well-balanced weapon, with skilled players having a great time using it but not having the dominance it has had in the past.

#15- Executioner

Executioner Clash Royale

The 5 elixir executioner can be one of the best support cards in Clash Royale, but it was falling a bit until these rankings. Now, the executioner is back in the top 15, but still a long way from the consistent top 5 spots that it used to get. The slow attack speed can sometimes hurt the executioner, but the range of damage it gives is unmatched.

#14- Witch

Witch Clash Royale

It’s always a good thing to see the witch out of the top 10, since it can be a super annoying card to play against when good. The buff in the April balance changes, which let her spawn 3 skeletons when she died, has helped her a little bit, but still has her on the outside of the meta, looking in. That’s a good thing for the health of the game though!

#13- Dark Prince

Dark Prince Clash Royale

The dark prince is going to be one of the biggest risers in these rankings, moving up 6 spots to slot in the top half of the epic cards. Players were extremely worried after the big buff in the May balance changes, but it actually turned out to be OK, with the dark prince in a pretty healthy spot right now in the meta.

#12- Prince

Prince Clash Royale

Just ahead of the other prince, the normal prince is going to slide in at #12. This is a fair spot for the prince, as he hasn’t really been top tier for quite some time now. I’m a big fan of the prince and am hoping that he continues to rise up the rankings with hopefully a very slight buff in the next balance changes that come.

#11- Lightning

Lightning Clash Royale

Even with the popularity of fireball and rocket, the two main competitors to lightning, the lightning continues to stay a popular spell. It is insane to think that a year ago, the lightning was considered one of the worst spells in Clash Royale. Now though, the lightning has a ton of different uses and definitely brings value for 6 elixir.

#10- Guards

Guards Clash Royale

The first card in the top 10 of our epic cards is going to be guards. Guards are great right now as a swarm defense card that can not be one shot by any of the popular two elixir spells. The shield is really what makes the guards so valued in the meta right now. Though they aren’t an offensive card, their defense is powerful enough to make them a top tier option.

#9- Goblin Barrel

Goblin Barrel Clash Royale

I love seeing the goblin barrel at the top of the meta because it is such a unique win condition. The more diversity added to decks, the better Clash Royale is going to be. It really is crazy that the goblin barrel is so good though, since giant snowball, log, and barbarian barrel can all completely counter the GB, but it continues to rise up.

#8- Tornado

Tornado Clash Royale

There’s no other spell quite like the tornado, whose main value doesn’t come from the damage it deals. The tornado can be great for changing mechanics. Executioner and tornado remains one of the best synergies in Clash Royale and there are a lot of other splash damage cards that can be paired together with tornado for great success.

#7- Poison

Poison Clash Royale

The poison is taking a little bit of a hit, thanks to the introduction of the earthquake, but it does still remain a top option as far as spells go. There is no card quite like the poison, which can damage a wide area of troops over a long period of time, unlike every other spell in Clash Royale. As long as the poison stays unique, you can count on it being at the top.

#6- Balloon

Balloon Clash Royale

Even with the slow movement speed of the balloon being a major negative, it consistently remains a great win condition in Clash Royale. Besides the lava hound, the balloon is the only other win condition that takes to the air. I have a feeling we will see another one soon, but for now, the balloon continues to dominate at all game levels.

#5- Golem

Golem Clash Royale

Without a doubt, golem is one of my favorite win conditions in Clash Royale, so it makes me happy to see it stay in the top 5 epic cards. With the inferno tower being as strong as it is, it’s amazing to see the golem continue to be a great card, but with the sheer HP of the golem, it is tough to get through the golem and golemites with just one building.

#4- PEKKA

PEKKA Clash Royale

The power that the PEKKA packs in each swing is unmatched in this game and is the main reason why the PEKKA continues to be a top 5 epic card for so long. There are so many decks that can be based around the PEKKA, which seem to change as the meta drifts, though the PEKKA never leaves the scene at all.

#3- Skeleton Army

Skeleton Army Clash Royale

Along with the dark prince, skeleton army is going to be our other biggest riser, moving up 6 spots to #3 in these epic card rankings. Nothing can beat the pure swarm mechanic of the skeleton army. If you are even a half second late deploying your spell to take down the skarmy, they can already be finished killing a golem on defense.

#2- Baby Dragon

Baby Dragon Clash Royale

With the mega minion also being very strong, we have a huge 1-2 punch of air support units that is killing it in Clash Royale right now. The baby dragon provides splash damage that is so useful in this game. Also, the versatility of the baby dragon allows it to fit into nearly every deck in CR, one of the most valuable traits a card can have.

#1- Barbarian Barrel

Barbarian Barrel Clash Royale

And finally, our number 1 card, to little surprise, is still the barbarian barrel. Despite a nerf to barbarians in the March balance changes, the barbarian barrel has remained as strong as ever, remarkable considering the popularity of the log, zap, and giant snowball. Unless something major happens, you can expect to see the BB up here for quite some time.

So that is going to wrap it up for our epic card rankings for May of 2019! Stay tuned soon to see our legendary card rankings. Thanks for reading and comment below what you think of the rankings!

  2. Apparently, the changes to the P.E.K.K.A. was actually a BUFF, based on use rates, she is now a top 10 card as oppose to her before the changes where she’s a top 20

  3. I think wall breakers needs a complete rework, any buff to him would still make him a bottom tier option

    uhh… earthquake does that

  5. In totally disagree with your statement about Goblin Giant, it has a whopping 63% win rate which is the highest out of all cards in the game, with 4% use rate which proves that it’s not easy to use, but with skills, Goblin Giant can be very good
