It is time for a new rare card rankings for all the rare cards in Clash Royale! We will be having a power ranking, 26-1, of the rare cards in Clash Royale as of May 2019. As many of you know, I have done this ranking before, back in February when there were still 26 cards. The top 5 cards then, in order, were mega minion, hog rider, fireball, ice golem, and inferno tower. Let’s see how much those rankings were shaken up over the past couple balance changes and updates!
You can view the old ranking here: https://clashfordummies.com/2019/05/28/clash-royale-rare-card-rankings-may-2019/
How the Rare Cards are Ranked
When ranking these cards we put a lot of thought and effort into what makes the best rare card the best. We are considering a variety of different ways to rank which are order in importance as follows:
- Cost/Damage Ratio (is the card worth it?)
- Strength on defense and offense
So now that you know what we are judging on, lets go ahead and get into the rankings, starting with number 26!
Note: Text color indicates which way the card is trending in regard to the May rankings.
Rare Card Rankings
There’s almost no question that the heal is not only the worst rare card, but also the worst card overall in Clash Royale. The heal isn’t powerful enough to have any real impact on the game which leaves it as an underused cycle card. Honestly, the heal was better at three elixir; even though we were all excited about the change, it flopped badly.
#25- Bomb Tower
Out of all the defenses in Clash Royale, the bomb tower is hands down the worst. With the power of cards like the inferno tower and tesla, there’s no room for the bomb tower in the meta. While the splash damage that the BT deals is captivating, it ultimately doesn’t end up doing much in a meta populated by air troops and single unit troops.
Who else remembers the old split lane meta from several months back? Zappies was at a high in that meta, but once royal recruits were nerfed, zappies fell with them. The reload mechanic nerf in the September balance changes last year killed zappies and they’ve never been able to return to even minimal usage ever since.
#23- Barbarian Hut
As I say every rankings, it’s great for the state of Clash Royale that the barbarian hut is one of the worst cards in Clash Royale. Luckily, no one wants to pay 7 elixir for a spawner, even though it does have high health. The elixir is much better spent on a PEKKA to lead an offensive charge or a mega knight for a quick defensive spawn.
#22- Goblin Hut
Similarly to the barbarian hut, I love that the goblin hut is this low in the rare card rankings. This card isn’t a strong option right now, since the chip damage actually doesn’t add up to that much. As a defense, there are stronger options out there, especially if you are using it strictly as a defensive building.
Originally, when the earthquake first came out, I thought it was one of the most balanced cards to ever be released in Clash Royale. However, over the past few months, the earthquake has really fallen off the original release. A main part of that reason is that buildings aren’t strong in the meta right now, but the earthquake still has room to improve.
You know I’m going to be happy when the top spawner is ranked as #20 (tombstone doesn’t count). I’ve never been a big fan of the furnace to begin with, but now that it’s not crazy OP, I’m warming up to it just a bit. It’s frustrating to play against though, since it is tough to fight through the steady stream of fire spirits that spawn.
#19- Elixir Collector
While some beatdown decks are strong in the meta right now, the elixir collector isn’t getting a lot of love in turn. With so many spells that can annihilate it, it’s super risky to play since the chances are that it will end in a negative elixir trade. I really want to see the elixir collector with more health, but the same lifetime to keep it up in the meta.
This is the lowest the rocket has been ranked in a long time and there is good reason. Other spells like the fireball are much stronger at the moment and there is no real need for the extra damage the rocket brings for 2 extra elixir. The slow travel time of the rocket also makes it tough to time and take out different troops, especially when they are moving.
After falling off a long reign in the top 10, the wizard is finally looking up, coming back up to number 17. Lately though, it’s been super easy to take out the wizard, with the number of one hit units getting upped in the game. The splash that the wizard provides it his biggest asset, but with so many splash units in Clash Royale, the value is diminished.
#16- Dart Goblin
Out of any card in Clash Royale, dart goblin has one of the highest potentials to change the way the game is played. The long range that the dart goblin brings can be invaluable, especially if he lines up from across the river. The problem is that the DG can be rolled over by the log, which makes it risky to place behind big tank units.
#15- Three Musketeers
One of the biggest fallers in these rare card rankings are the three musketeers, which is down 9 spots to the #15 spot. Ever since the quick change from being the best to the worst to back up again, the three musketeers have fallen a bit, not being the prime win condition they used to be. I like three musketeers at 9 elixir, not 10!
It seems as if every time I wrote this article, valkyrie has fluctuated between the #10 and #18 spots. It can never get to be OP, but it also hasn’t been weak throughout its life cycle. This is card that is solid for defense, but a bit weaker on offense. As long as you use the valkyrie correctly on defense, it can be a super powerful card.
#13- Royal Hogs
After being plummeted to the bottom of the meta, royal hogs have slowly climbed back up, rising up to the top half of rare cards now. I really enjoy the idea behind royal hogs and I’m so hopeful that royal hogs continue to be a useable win condition. Plus, with the royal hogs being powerful, the bomb tower could benefit as well.
#12- Inferno Tower
My thought is that the PEKKA is the best win condition in Clash Royale right now, which the inferno tower is perfect for countering. However, the inferno tower has fallen down the rankings a bit, dropping from its top 5 position. It is still a strong defensive card, which is the ultimate card for shutting down tank cards.
#11- Flying Machine
I have always viewed the flying machine as the next level of the dart goblin. This is a stronger, flying version of the dart goblin that only costs 1 elixir more, and won’t be taken down by a two elixir spell. The best part about the flying machine is the versatility. This card can fit into literally any deck archetype in Clash Royale, which is perfect for ranking well.
The tombstone has distanced itself from the rest of the spawners, mostly by being a cheap card and not relying on chip damage. The steady stream of skeletons can shut down any slow moving unit and the burst of skeletons that spawn at the end are enough to completely counter more expensive cards like the prince.
It seems as if the giant is always hanging around the #10 spot, not moving much in either direction. While the giant is a great tank card, the PEKKA sort of overshadows it right now, but there are still uses for the giant. As a cheaper tank, you have more options for support units in behind, which can sometimes be more powerful than a PEKKA push.
In these rare card rankings, the mini-PEKKA is going to be the highest riser, going up 14 spots from #22 to #8. I couldn’t be happier about this change, since the mini-PEKKA is definitely one of my favorite cards in Clash Royale. I don’t really understand what happened to make the mini-PEKKA this strong, but it is seeing loads more usage.
#7- Goblin Cage
One of the newest cards in Clash Royale, and one of the cards I had doubts about, is now a top 10 card! The goblin cage is somehow going to wind up at the #7 ranking. The mechanic behind the goblin cage is so unique, acting as almost a stronger tombstone. The goblin from the cage is super powerful, which helps the ranking.
#6- Battle Ram
Just missing out on the top 5 is going to be the battle ram, which is a decent, quick option to get a bit of chip damage onto the opponent’s tower. The battle ram has been a top tier win condition for a while now, being a reliable option to at least get your elixir returned, even if it doesn’t score that big hit onto the tower.
Being one of my favorite cards in the game, I’m ecstatic that the musketeer has managed to jump back into the top 5 rare cards. This isn’t the flashiest card in Clash Royale, but it does consistently get its hits in, being a decent counter to a lot of cards in the game. Support-wise, the musketeer can pair well with a bunch of different deck archetypes too!
#4- Hog Rider
As always, the hog rider is going to remain a top-tier win condition in Clash Royale, with no other card being able to replicate the quick cycle ability that the hog brings to deck building. The speed of the hog is what really makes it great, since it can quickly reach the tower. Combined with some other fast moving support units and you have a solid push.
#3- Ice Golem
Out of any card in the game, I think the ice golem takes the crown for most versatile in play. He can act as an offensive unit, being a mini tank for a bit of chip damage, or provide solid defense, either for heavy hitters or for swarm units. The two elixir cost also helps the ice golem big time, since you can add the card in with just a few seconds wait.
One of the strongest cards in Clash Royale at the moment, the fireball is ridiculously strong, being able to annihilate any card that has medium health. This is one of the best card in the game to overlevel so that you can win some interactions. It also deals a good bit of damage to the tower, making it nice to end a game once there is less than 500 HP.
#1- Mega Minion
The three elixir cost of the mega minion is what really makes it powerful. In order to take down the mega minion, you MUST use a 6 elixir spell, which is out of the question. Since it is flying too, only a select number of cards are equipped to handle it. Honestly, I think it needs a slight nerf to either its health or damage in order to bring it back down.
So that is going to wrap it up for our rare card rankings for August of 2019! Stay tuned soon to see our epic and legendary card rankings soon. Thanks for reading and comment below what you think of the rankings!
