It is time for a new epic card rankings for all the epic cards in Clash Royale! We will be having a power ranking, 27-1, of the epic cards in Clash Royale as of August 2019. As many of you know, I have done this ranking before, when there were still 27 epic cards. The top 5 cards then, in order, were barbarian barrel, baby dragon, skeleton army, PEKKA, and golem. Let’s see how much those rankings were shaken up over the past couple balance changes and updates!
You can view the old ranking here: https://clashfordummies.com/2019/05/29/clash-royale-epic-card-rankings-may-2019/
How the Epic Cards are Ranked
When ranking these cards we put a lot of thought and effort into what makes the best epic card the best. We are considering a variety of different ways to rank which are order in importance as follows:
- Versatility
- Cost/Damage Ratio (is the card worth it?)
- Strength on defense and offense
So now that you know what we are judging on, lets go ahead and get into the rankings, starting with number 27!
Note: Text color indicates which way the card is trending in regard to the May rankings.
Epic Card Rankings
#27- Wall Breakers
I can’t remember a card that released as poorly as wall breakers. Ever since their release in February 2019, wall breakers have been one of the worst cards in Clash Royale, offering almost no value whatsoever. I feel like it would be somewhat easy to make this card relevant in the meta, but the Clash Royale development team has failed to do so thus far.
#26- Rage
Some decks with rage included can be super annoying to play against, so it’s a good sign for the health of the meta that rage sits this low in the epic card rankings. With the lumberjack being a more popular choice as far as raging goes, the solo rage spell has suffered a bit, with no one willing to fork over the 2 elixir.
#25- Bowler
It’s been a long, LONG time since the bowler has sat in the top half of the epic card rankings. The issue with the bowler is that the best synergy it has is with the graveyard, which is not a popular win condition at the moment. The bowler needs to find its own niche in Clash Royale in order to succeed and see some playing time.
#24- Mirror
I’ve been hearing some rumors out there for the dark mirror entering Clash Royale soon, which MIGHT help the mirror make a comeback to become a strong card in the game. Right now, the mirror usually isn’t worth the extra one elixir cost, except in very niche situations. And with only 8 card spots, you don’t want a card for only niche situations.
#23- Hunter
I’ve never been the biggest fan of the hunter and the reason is because he needs to get close to an opponent to do damage, which doesn’t work for a unit with as little HP as the hunter. There is definitely a spot for the hunter in the meta, but I think that he needs a slight HP buff in order to not be annihilated at close range.
#22- Executioner
It’s really strange to see the executioner this low in the rankings, since he had a long reign in the top 10. However, the executioner will be one of our biggest fallers, down 7 spots from the May rankings. For some reason, players just aren’t favoring the executioner anymore, which I think is due to his insanely slow attack speed.
#21- Clone
Clone? Number 21?! How did this happen??!! It is absolutely amazing to actually play against decks with the clone included in it, as the clone has made up a bunch of play share in the last three months. Honestly, the clone is no longer a joke card, with actual situations where it is extremely valuable and can swing the tide of a match.
#20- Witch
Similar to the executioner, the witch used to be a consistent top 10 epic card, but now is almost out of the top 20. As decks go cheaper and cheaper, the 5 elixir witch might be too much to invest in since there are other cards that can do similar things to the witch for less elixir, which can ultimately impact a push quite a lot.
#19- Prince
Even though the dark prince is one of the best epic cards in Clash Royale, the prince is towards the bottom. The prince is going to be the other card that dropped 7 spots to be one of our biggest fallers. The meta right now just doesn’t fit well with the prince, since so many spawn cards are at an all-time high.
#18- Freeze
When they first changed the freeze mechanic, I was a huge fan, and used it in one of my primary decks for a few months. After that though, the freeze slowly slipped back down to where it was before. However, now we are seeing the freeze start to come back up a bit, though it is still a long ways away from where it used to be.
#17- Cannon Cart
A lot of you might think the cannon cart should be a little bit lower in these rankings, but after playing it a little bit, it is a strong card and a lot can be accomplished by using it in your deck. It forces a quick counter from your opponent, which can often lead to a mistake. If the cannon cart catches on, it can rise up the rankings fast.
#16- Electro-Dragon
The electro-dragon used to be one of the most OP cards in Clash Royale and then got nerfed into oblivion. However, the electro-dragon has slowly been on the return, making its claim as one of the best defensive cards in Clash Royale. If it had a bit quicker of an attack speed, it could regain its place at the top of the epic cards.
#15- Giant Skeleton
Speaking of great defensive cards, the giant skeleton is looking real good right now. Though still a long way from an elite offensive card, the defensive capability that the giant skeleton brings to the table is unmatched. You can create such a positive elixir trade that it doesn’t even matter if the giant skeleton isn’t around for a return offensive push.
#14- Goblin Giant
Something finally happened with the goblin giant as it is no longer the worst win condition in Clash Royale. Actually, the goblin giant just barely misses out on the top half of epic cards, which is a big turnaround for this card. Players are finally starting to figure out how to best play the goblin giant and it is on the rise!
#13- Guards
I really like the idea behind guards, but the skeleton army is one step ahead right now, since they deal more damage and can impact a defense quicker. Still though, the fact that guards cannot die to spell is invaluable, especially in the era of two elixir spells that can other defensive cards like the skeleton army in one play.
#12- Golem
It is shocking to see the golem this low, as I don’t think the golem has ever been ranked this low in the history of the epic card rankings. The meta is so anti-golem right now, with the PEKKA and mega knight taking up a lot of the play the golem used to get. The golem is far from gone from the meta, but this should be worrisome for the future.
#11- Lightning
Since lightning used to be one of the worst cards in Clash Royale, ranking #11 shouldn’t feel too terrible. Lightning is definitely an upper tier spell, since the three pronged attack allows it to take out a variety of units or buildings. I really like the gameplay behind the lightning, and the attempts to make sure you hit the cards you want to hit.
#10- Tornado
One of the most unique cards in Clash Royale, it’s almost impossible to see the tornado slipping too far down in the meta. What the tornado brings to the game is irreplaceable. With this card you can activate the king’s tower, pull troops to the other lane, plus provide some damage onto them (taking out skeletons and bats).
#9- Skeleton Army
I’ve been playing the skeleton army since I first downloaded Clash Royale and my love for the card has never waned. The skarmy has one of the biggest DPS in Clash Royale, which makes it super valuable on defense. Even against splash damage troops, there are so many skeletons in this card that you can overwhelm almost any card.
#8- Goblin Barrel
Since the goblin barrel is one of the highlight cards for Clash Royale, it’s always good to see it high up in the meta. Ever since the goblins were able to survive a zap, the goblin barrel has been crushing it. The giant snowball is still a decent counter, but having the timing is sometimes hard, so the goblins can get a few stabs on the tower.
#7- X-Bow
The x-bow is up big time, as it looks as though siege is making a small comeback. Even though I don’t really like playing siege cards, the x-bow is super powerful right now, with the range to take out cards from across the map. If you can defend the x-bow for a good amount of time, you can get unmatched damage onto the tower.
#6- Balloon
I really want to see another air win condition added to the game, but for now, the balloon will do. We are seeing it less and less with the lava hound as it becomes its own card, with the power to reach the tower with the right support. Remember, having only one bomb drop by the balloon will end up with a ton of damage on the tower.
#5- Barbarian Barrel
Finally, we see the barbarian barrel start to fall as nerfs and the popularity of zap, giant snowball, and log catch up to it. The barbarian barrel has been nerfed twice since the last epic card rankings, and the damage decreases are starting to show. The barbarian barrel is still a great card, but no longer dominant as it used to be.
#4- Baby Dragon
The baby dragon has remained one of the best support cards in Clash Royale, fitting in well with so many different kinds of decks, from PEKKA decks to LavaLoon. The air splash damage is unbeatable as the baby dragon can counter so many different cards that might come up to counter your big push.
#3- Poison
Lately, the poison really has been a top tier spell option, competing with fireball for the best four elixir spell. The slow tick damage the poison brings makes it perfect for combining with big pushes to clear a whole array of cards from the arena. If it was a bit more powerful, I have no doubt it’d be the best spell in Clash Royale.
#2- Dark Prince
The biggest riser in these epic card rankings is the dark prince, which is up 11 spots from #13 to #2. I’m a big fan of the dark prince as a secondary tank unit, perfect for fitting in well with PEKKA attacks to add some splash damage to the mix. This is the highest the dark prince has been in a while and I hope he stays in this spot.
#1- PEKKA
Probably unsurprisingly, the PEKKA is our number 1 epic card for August 2019. The PEKKA has been dominant over the summer, being the top win condition in Clash Royale. Currently it has a 25% USAGE rate, which is crazy high for a high elixir, non-support card like the PEKKA. There will probably be a slight nerf in a future balance change.
So that is going to wrap it up for our epic card rankings for August of 2019! Stay tuned soon to see our legendary card rankings. Thanks for reading and comment below what you think of the rankings!

I haven’t played Clash for quite a long time, so it’s kinda weird for me to see Balloon is no longer used in the same deck with Lava Hound, but cool to see more unique options to support it
Also, Executioner rework is confirmed
